Anne and Sven's Invitation

Anne and Sven’s Custom Wedding Invitation Set

Anne and Sven’s wedding was set to the gorgeous backdrop of Italy’s Lake Como. Anne had come to me requesting a very simple, yet elegant invitation suite that would set the stage for their nuptials.

Classic Elegance

Classic Elegance

Each invitation would feature the individual guest’s name and be digitally printed in gold ink on soft, cotton paper. During my initial consultation with Anne, a simple and clean double border around the invite was discussed. However, the more I learned about the setting and elements of Anne and Sven’s wedding, more ideas came to mind. Still, I wanted to be very mindful of  Anne and Sven’s vision of their day. (Simple, classic and beautiful)

Anne had told me that they had been thinking of adding some pearls to the table decor. This inspired me to add a stylish flourish with printed beadwork and a small hand applied pearl drop to each invitation. I assured Anne that the invitation sets would still be very elegant and not too fussy. I added a shimmery pearlescent envelope liner in a soft cream color to reflect the luster of pearl. It served as a perfect textural compliment to the invitation set. I then went ahead and sent Anne and Sven a sample for approval.

I was so so happy they loved the idea and thought it the perfect fit for their big event!

It is honestly one of my biggest pleasures to collaborate with my clients and create a unique stationery suite that truly captures their spirit and the essence of the wedding.

Anne was gracious enough to share some photos of her gorgeous wedding this past May. Thank you and congratulations to the lovely couple!!!

Envelope Addressing

Envelope Addressing

Addressing Envelopes – Part 1

The correct way to address your wedding invitation envelopes is a question that pops up every once in a while. I will let you know the proper etiquette for printing both return and guest addresses on your wedding envelopes.

Customarily, the return address consists only of the street address. This is typically positioned on the back flap of the envelope. Quite different from normal post, the return address for wedding invitations is never positioned in the top left, front/face of the envelopes.

In the past, the return address was often blind embossed, without ink onto the back flap. The idea behind keeping the return address so subtle, was to give the recipient a bigger impression of the gorgeous invitation waiting inside the envelope. ( a larger “wow” factor). Today, the look can also be achieved using the letterpress technique without ink or printed digitally using tone on tone inks.

However, during these more modern times, the envelope has itself stepped into the spotlight quite a bit. Offerings include colored variations, wooden veneers, custom made monograms as well as beautiful designed liners to slip inside the envelope itself. They are fast becoming a beautiful accessory to the main event — the invitation.

The worry is no longer of taking away from the importance of the invitation, but instead, adding to it. Each item in a wedding stationery suite is thoughtfully considered. The effect is a beautifully curated and well thought out design that punctuates the beauty of the wedding day. It will set the tone for the event and add a sense of excitement and anticipation for your guests.

Stay tuned for Part 2 of this article. I will cover the proper etiquette of printing guest names and addresses.

Skylands Manor

Skylands Manor at New Jersey’s Botanical Gardens

I was reflecting back on one of my all time favorite wedding invitations. The wedding took place in February during an unbelievable snow storm. It was a record year here in New Jersey for storms, most notably Hurricane Sandy. Much of the design and print work was put together during superstorm Sandy. Yes, it was nearly impossible to have this completed with no means of power for almost 3 weeks! With perseverance, this snowy, woodland theme came to life.

I first consulted with Melissa and John about their wedding and the style they wished to evoke on their special day. The wedding took place at the beautiful Skylands Manor, New Jersey’s Botanical Gardens. The idea for the custom invitations easily fell into place after visiting the gardens and reception site. I had drawn up some sketches of the venue and taken a tour of the grounds. The wedding suite would feature both the surrounding natural, woodland beauty and the grand architecture of the castle itself. The overall feel would become a glamorous, woodland  theme. Natural elements along with the sparkle of Swarovski crystals throughout gave the icy vibe I was looking for.

Snowflakes in different styles were cut from numerous paper weights and finishes. These were then carefully packed into glassine envelopes to add a bit of whimsy to the wintery wedding suite.

The design also included pinecones, winter berries, tree branches and evergreens.  Direction cards with a custom pinecone motif were folded and fastened with silver cord.

Recently, I reimagined this wedding suite with a beautiful winter border suitable for all winter weddings! I also added NEW pinecone envelope liners and seating card options. For ideas on floral arrangements and boutonnieres to complete this Woodland Winter themed wedding, see below. To add a bit of drama, you may easily incorporate natural elements in different shades of white, green and woodsy brown with some sparkle. Here, I wired small hemlock pinecones and then proceeded to beed them with crystals and seed pearls. When in midtown New York, I often like to visit Hymen Hendler & Sons — a specialty shop carrying ribbons and millinery. It is there that I found these beautiful vintage, white velvet leaves. I was just waiting for the right occasion to use them. I decided they would make the perfect backer for my beaded pinecone stems.

For table decor, vases wrapped in natural wood bark are a great find! Winter white roses, evergreens, small twigs, pinecones and the white velvet leaf with bejeweled pinecones gave an unexpected pop of sparkle to the arrangement.

To add a woodsy glow to the event, tea lights were inserted into small slabs cut from trees. Each votive holder was of different width and height to add interest to the tablescape.

A wedding is one of the most exciting and special events of your life. It celebrates you and your love. One of the first things your guests and loved ones will see is the invitation suite announcing this celebration. It will set the tone and feel of the event and should reflect both of you as a couple.

Adding custom details such as monograms, favorite flowers, colors or mutual interests into the design really help make it more personal. This will be something you will look back on for years to come. Many of my brides have the stationery from their wedding framed! It is a great bespoke keepsake and a wonderful way to commemorate the event.

One of my brides felt very strongly about incorporating her pet into the festivities. Pets are so much a part of our lives and families. After speaking to the couple, we decided it would be fitting to add their sweet cat into the stationery suite. Poses of the feline decorated everything format he invitation to the escort cards. To further personalize these invitations, a line was printed for a calligrapher to hand address each invitation to the individual recipient.

I have also created invitations that hold the brides favorite flowers or give a nod to the design of the bridal dress. Using envelope liners with the couple names or a special motif also creates a more personal aspect to the stationery set.

I have even traveled and looked at couples venues and hand illustrated the event site for an extra personal invitation and appreciation for the celebration site. This particular wedding took place at Skyland Manor in Ringwood, home of New Jerseys botanical gardens. The reception site features a beautiful castle amongst stunning grounds. Although my travel took place during the summer months, we knew that this wedding would a wintery affair. The theme would be a custom woodland winter inspired suite. I sketched the castle and decided to frame it with bare trees and snowflakes which were further embellished swarovski crystals for added twinkle. Later, faux bois velum sheets were used as wrappers to encase the invite adding to the magical woodland theme.
